1. Listen first, for a full minute
Turn to FRS/GMRS Ch 1 — 462.5625 — and just listen. You are checking nobody is mid-conversation. A minute feels long. Do it anyway.
“(nothing — this step is silent)”
2. Decide what you are going to say
You need two things: who you are, and what you want. That is the whole transmission. Read the line below until it feels automatic.
“This is [your callsign or name], listening.”
3. Key up and hold for a beat
Press the button, count one, then speak. Radios clip the first fraction of a second, and a beat of silence saves your first word.
“(press… one… then speak)”
4. Make the call
Say it once, clearly, at normal speaking pace. Then release the button and wait ten seconds. Do not repeat immediately — you cannot hear anyone answer while you are transmitting.
“This is [your callsign], monitoring FRS/GMRS Ch 1. Anyone around?”
5. Someone answers
They will give their callsign. Give yours back and a signal report — how well you hear them. "Loud and clear" is a complete answer.
“[their callsign], this is [your callsign]. Reading you loud and clear. Thanks for coming back.”
6. Finish cleanly
Ending well is what makes people answer you next time. Name them, thank them, and clear.
“[their callsign], this is [your callsign], clear. 73.”
Everyone was new once, and nobody is listening for mistakes. The worst that happens is silence, and silence costs you nothing.
